What makes quality firewood?

Although almost everyone has stoked a fireplace or campfire at some point, many are unaware of the factors that influence the quality of firewood.

Moisture Content

hudson valley firewood The most important aspect of a piece of firewood is moisture content. Burning firewood with high moisture content, also called “green wood” and “wet wood,” will create fires that lack heat and produce excessive smoke. The smoke from these low-heat fires contains chemicals, like creosote, which can build up on a fireplace or chimney and make it hard to clean, and even introduce a fire hazard. The wood itself, if wet for too long, may grow mold and become a health hazard. Additionally, firewood with high moisture content is difficult to light and the fires on them are hard to sustain.

Wood Density

The density of the firewood is also important. Density may also be referred to as “dry weight per per volume” or “heat per cord.” It is a measure of how much energy and heat is packed into the wood. Two pieces of firewood of equal size but different densities will burn differently, and the denser wood will give off more heat and may burn for a greater span of time.

Firewood Usage

The significance of other factors in optimal firewood depends on the context in which you plan to burn it. For example: for a fireplace, firewood that pops or sparks when lit, such as conifer wood, can introduce a fire hazard and should be avoided, and the fragrance of the wood will be more relevant than in other uses; for a wood stove, however, the coals produced by the firewood is a more important consideration, as this will influence the ability of the fire to sustain overnight.

Bringing Firewood with You?

Most people don't realize they move bugs along with their firewood. You could be spreading diseases from insect invaders that can quickly kill large numbers of trees. Our forests are at risk from the transport of firewood infested with tree killers. Help STOP THE SPREAD of these pests.
